Hai semuanya, pada materi sebelumnya kita sudah membahas sedikit tentang Data Manipulation language atau di singkat DML. Nah sekarang kita akan bahas lebih detail khususnya untuk perintah INSERT yang telah kita pelajari di materi sebelumnya hanyalah simple sebetulnya secara syntax perintahnya seperti berikut:

where conflict_target can be one of:

Nah jadi jika kita perhatikan ada beberapa clause yang kita bisa gunakan diantaranya:

  1. Insert with specific columns and data type
  2. Insert with DEFAULT VALUE
  3. Insert single and multiple rows
  4. Insert with ON CONFLICT
  5. Insert with OVERRIDING keyword
  6. Using with query in INSERT statement
  7. Error message on insert statement

Nah lumayan banyak dan panjang juga ya ternyata untuk perintah insert yang kita bisa gunakan, jadi kita akan coba break-down aja ya masing-masing feature:

Insert with specific columns and data type

The target column names can be listed in any order. If no list of column names is given at all, the default is all the columns of the table in their declared order; or the first N column names, if there are only N columns supplied by the VALUES clause or query. The values supplied by the VALUES clause or query are associated with the explicit or implicit column list left-to-right.

If the expression for any column is not of the correct data type, automatic type conversion will be attempted.

INSERT INTO <table_name> [ ( column_name [, ...] ) ]
    { VALUES ( { expression | DEFAULT } [, ...] ) [, ...] }

Sebagai contoh, saya ingin menambahkan data pada table employees dengan struktur table seperti berikut

Insert with DEFAULT VALUE

All columns will be filled with their default values, as if DEFAULT were explicitly specified for each column. (An OVERRIDING clause is not permitted in this form.)

Each column not present in the explicit or implicit column list will be filled with a default value, either its declared default value or null if there is none.

Sebagai contoh kita akan edit struktur table employees pada columnn salary dengan menambahkan default value dengan query seperti berikut:

Nah sekarang kita lihat struktur tablenya seperti berikut:

Kemudian jika kita specify column salary tetapi jika kita kasih nilai null dengan query seperti berikut:

Kemudian bagaimana jika kita mau menggunakan nilai defaultnya jika kita specify column tersebut, kita bisa gunakan keyword DEFAULT seperti berikut:

Jadi kesimpulannya jika kita mau menggunakan default value kita bisa menggunakan 2 cara yaitu tidak men-specify kolom yang kita input dan juga menggunakan expression atau keyword DEFAULT pada values form.

Insert single and multiple rows

INSERT statement is inserts new rows into a table. One can insert one or more rows specified by value expressions, or zero or more rows resulting from a query. Berikut syntax dasarnya:

INSERT INTO table_name [ AS alias ] [ ( column_name [, ...] ) ]
    VALUES ( { expression | DEFAULT } [, ...] ) [, ( { expression | DEFAULT } , ... )] 

Implementasi pada querynya seperti berikut:

Meskipun kita bisa mengirimkan data lebih dari satu bahkan bisa ribuan data tpi temen-temen juga perlu pertimbahkan kerkait performa databasenya. Karena semakin banyak data yang dikirimkan dalam satu query biasanya akan menghambat proses lainnya.

Jadi biasanya jika misalnya saya akan mengimput jutaan data biasanya akan saya bagi-bagi menjadi beberapa bulk misalnya query pertama berisi 1000 baris, kemudian query kedua kita kirimkan lagi 1000 baris selanjutnya dan begitu pula selanjutnya sampai semua data selesai.

Insert with ON CONFLICT

The optional ON CONFLICT clause specifies an alternative action to raising a unique violation or exclusion constraint violation error. For each individual row proposed for insertion, either the insertion proceeds, or, if an arbiter constraint or index specified by conflict_target is violated, the alternative conflict_action is taken. ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING simply avoids inserting a row as its alternative action. ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE updates the existing row that conflicts with the row proposed for insertion as its alternative action.

Pastikan jika temen-temen mau menggunakan feature ini harus menggunakan PostgreSQL Server versi minimum 9.5 atau lebih tinggi.

Berikut syntax dasarnya:

INSERT INTO table_name [ AS alias ] [ ( column_name [, ...] ) ]
    { DEFAULT VALUES | VALUES ( { expression | DEFAULT } [, ...] ) [, ...] | query }
    [ ON CONFLICT [ conflict_target ] conflict_action ]

Contoh yang paling umum adalah seperti berikut, misalnya saya mau insert data jika key sudah ada maka update value tersebut dengan perintah seperti berikut:

Insert with OVERRIDING keyword

The optional OVERRIDING clause specifies an alternative action to replace default or initialize value defined on Data Definition (DML). Berikut adalah contoh syntaxnya:

INSERT INTO table_name [ AS alias ] [ ( column_name [, ...] ) ]
    [ OVERRIDING { SYSTEM | USER } VALUE ]
    { DEFAULT VALUES | VALUES ( { expression | DEFAULT } [, ...] ) [, ...] | query }

Ada 2 clause pada OVERRIDING yaitu

  1. OVERRIDING SYSTEM VALUE, If this clause is specified, then any values supplied for identity columns will override the default sequence-generated values.
  2. OVERRIDING USER VALUE, If this clause is specified, then any values supplied for identity columns are ignored and the default sequence-generated values are applied.

Karena disini kita belum punya workloadnya atau belum memiliki tabel dengan structure identity, jadi kita belum bisa praktekan tapi most commons OVERRIDING query digunakan untuk mengcopy data dari 1 tabel ke tabel lainnya dengan meng-replace value dari column yang menjadi primary key.

Mungkin nanti kita akan praktekan di section selanjutnya yaitu Data Definition Language (DDL).

Using with query in INSERT statement

The WITH clause allows you to specify one or more subqueries that can be referenced by name in the INSERT query.

[ WITH [ RECURSIVE ] with_query [, ...] ]

INSERT INTO table_name [ AS alias ] [ ( column_name [, ...] ) ]
    { DEFAULT VALUES | VALUES ( { expression | DEFAULT } [, ...] ) [, ...] | query }
    [ RETURNING * | output_expression [ [ AS ] output_name ] [, ...] ]

It is possible for the query (SELECT statement) to also contain a WITH clause. In such a case both sets of with_query can be referenced within the query, but the second one takes precedence since it is more closely nested.

Sebagai contoh misalnnya saya mau insert ke tabel employees beserta job_history sekaligus dengan structur table seperti berikut:

Karena employee_id by default digenerate oleh object sequance jadi kita perlu ambil dulu sequancenya kemudian kita masukan value hasil generate tersebut ke column employee_id pada tabel job_history berikut adalah implementasi querynya:

Error message on insert statement

Jika temen-temen praktekan materi sebelumnya it’s just works, but tidak selamanya pasti berhasil kadangkala kita akan menghadapi error yang sebetulnya di bagi jadi 3 yaitu syntax, semantic, dan logic tapi kita kali ini tidak akan membahas secara detail terkait itu tetapi kita memfokuskan beberapa kesalahan yang sering terjadi pada saat kita menggunakan Insert statement.

Beberapa kesalahan yang sering terjadi bagi temen-temen yang masih pemula yaitu biasanya adalah typo, invalid syntax dan missing keyword. Terlepas dari itu ada juga kesalah yang secara syntax sudah betul tetapi begitu di execute erorr ini bisanya kita sebut runtime exception/error seperti

  1. Duplicate constraint/key, contohnya duplicate primary key seperti berikut

     hr=# insert into regions(region_id, region_name) values (1, 'Other');
     ERROR:  duplicate key value violates unique constraint "regions_pkey"
     DETAIL:  Key (region_id)=(1) already exists.
    
  2. Error validation, contohnya pada struktur table tidak boleh null tpi kita input null seperti berikut:

     hr=# insert into employees (first_name) values ('Dimas Maryanto');
     ERROR:  null value in column "last_name" of relation "employees" violates not-null constraint
     DETAIL:  Failing row contains (3, Dimas Maryanto, null, null, null, null, null, null, null, null).
    
  3. Refference value does’t match with foreign-key, contohnya kita ke tabel employees pada column job_id yang nilainya belum di definisikan pada table jobs seperti berikut:

     ERROR:  insert or update on table "employees" violates foreign key constraint "fk_employees_job_id"

  4. Invalid data type, contohnya column spec menggunakan date tetapi yang kita input tidak sesuai seperti berikut:

     ERROR:  date/time field value out of range: "2020/28/10"
     LINE 2: values (100, '2020/28/10', 'IT_PROG', 90)
                         ^
     HINT:  Perhaps you need a different "datestyle" setting.
    

Selain itu juga masih ada beberapa failure yang terjadi karena factor external seperti service postgresql mati, server mati, network unreachable dan lain-lain.

Ok begitulah kurang lebih ya beberapa kesalahan/error/failure yang mengebabkan data yang kita input tidak dapat di simpan pada Database PostgreSQL yang perlu temen-temen perhatikan adalah bagaimana cara troubleshoot dan handling error tersebut menggunakan beberapa strategi.
